Thor’s Lore
Reclaimed Timber. Renewed Purpose. Finished with Bio Epoxy Innovation.
Recycled and reclaimed timber is more than a material at Thor’s Hammer — it’s a philosophy.
Built on Craft, Heritage, and Sustainability
Nestled on the leafy edge of Griffith in Canberra, Thor’s Hammer operates from a purpose-built 11,000-square-metre headquarters housing a skilled team of timber recyclers, joiners, and furniture makers united by a mission to reduce waste and celebrate heritage materials.
Founded in 1994 by timber recycling pioneer Thor Diesendorf, the business grew from humble beginnings into one of Australia’s most respected reclaimed timber specialists.
“I’ve always been hands-on and enjoyed working with tools and wood,” Thor reflects, inspired by his engineer grandfathers and guided early on by a mentor carpenter who helped refine his craft.
Today, Thor’s Hammer employs more than 30 craftspeople and stands as a landmark of sustainable manufacturing — where traditional woodworking meets modern finishing technology.
Giving Australian Hardwoods a Second Life
Specialising in 100% reclaimed Australian species such as:
Spotted Gum
Blackbutt
Ironbark
The team salvages timber from:
Historic wharves
Winery beams
Industrial factories
House demolitions
Each piece is tracked, catalogued, and repurposed into high-end architectural products, custom joinery, and bespoke furniture.
“We track the origin of every piece of timber so its story lives on — whether in a dining table or a winery fit-out,” says Thor.
Where Bio Epoxy Meets Natural Timber
Preserving the integrity and longevity of heritage timber requires advanced finishing systems that protect without masking the wood’s natural beauty. That’s where KINETIX ECO-X R135 Bio-Based Epoxy Resin System comes in.
Used for:
Filling nail holes & voids
Stabilising imperfections
Surface coating & encapsulation
Structural bonding
The solvent-free, USDA-certified bio-based epoxy contains 26% bio-based carbon content, derived from renewable feedstocks and industrial by-products. “It’s Australian made, performs exceptionally well, and delivers a beautiful natural finish,” Thor adds. Beyond internal production, Thor’s Hammer also resells ATL Bio Epoxy kits to furniture makers and woodworkers — extending sustainable material innovation across the broader woodworking community.
Why Bio-Based Epoxy is Better for Reclaimed Timber.
- Preserves Natural Character. Crystal-clear finish enhances grain, colour, and heritage markings without yellowing.
- Superior Void Filling. Stabilises nail holes, cracks, and imperfections common in reclaimed hardwoods.
- UV Stability. Maintains clarity and prevents long-term ambering — critical for architectural pieces.
- Mechanical Strength. Reinforces aged timber, improving durability for structural and furniture applications.
- Sustainable Chemistry. 26% bio-based carbon content supports environmentally responsible manufacturing.
- Solvent-Free & Low VOC. Safer for craftspeople and workshop environments.
- Australian Made Quality. Locally manufactured to ensure reliable supply, consistent performance, and a reduced carbon transport footprint.
Craftsmanship Meets Environmental Responsibility
Thor’s Hammer represents the intersection of heritage craftsmanship and forward-thinking sustainability.
By combining reclaimed Australian hardwoods with advanced bio-based epoxy systems from ATL Composites, they continue to set the benchmark for architectural timber innovation — proving that performance materials and environmental responsibility can work hand in hand.
