ATL Composites partnered with Lightning Composites to supply high-performance epoxy systems and coatings that enable stronger, lighter carbon fibre car parts tailored for the extreme demands of V8 Supercar motorsport applications.
Bruce Mooring, of Lightning Composites on Queensland’s Gold Coast, has been using ATL’s KINETIX® Epoxy Systems and DURATEC® in-mould coatings for several years to meet the high strength and toughness required by the high performance motor-sport industry, specifically V8 Supercars.
Bruce continues to use DURATEC® 714-002 White Surface Primer for his front bumpers, which is lighter than standard gelcoat systems, and allows him to go straight to the topcoat application after minimum sanding.
DURATEC® 904-046 Top Coat Clear is used in areas that require a clear carbon finish, for example, on the dash, door skins and rear wings.
Recently, Bruce has made the change from vacuum-bagged wet epoxy lamination, to closed-mould infusion with ATL’s KINETIX® R118 / H120 and consumables from the AIRTECH range.
Bruce uses a variety of advanced E-fibreglass and carbon reinforcements, and structural foam cores, to provide lightweight stiffness to the parts, and all secondary bonding is completed with TECHNIGLUE R5 toughened adhesive, tinted with WEST SYSTEM® 502 Black pigment paste.

DURATEC® 714-002 provides a super-fine levelling and filling system on a variety of substrates. Rapid coat build-up, wet-on-wet, on composite plugs and master mold surfaces will save time and labour costs. Once cured, 714-002 cures to a surface that can be polished to a high-gloss , if required.
DURATEC® 904-046 Top Coat Clear provides a superior chemical resistant, high-gloss finish that sands easily and polishes to a non-wax, tack-free finish that is suitable for architectural woodwork, automotive dashboards, kitchen cabinetry, marine and aircraft interiors and musical instruments.
KINETIX® R118 infusion resin with H120 hardener is a very low viscosity, room temperature system that enhances fibre-wetting, and enables the production of void-free laminates that have excellent mechanical properties and high moisture resistance.
TECHNIGLUE R5 toughened adhesive has outstanding resistance to micro-cracking resulting in a greatly improved resistance to fatigue. Impact resistance of FRP structures can also be improved significantly.
