Crystic® VE679 PA (Thix HV)

Highly Thixotropic Vinyl Ester Skincoat Resin for Superior Surface Finish

Crystic® VE679 PA (Thix HV) is a pre-accelerated, highly thixotropic, DCPD-modified vinyl ester resin developed for hand lay-up and spray lamination where surface finish, blister resistance, and print-through control are critical.

Specifically formulated as a vinyl ester skincoat, VE679 PA (Thix HV) provides excellent cure in thin laminates and can be applied to vertical or complex surfaces without drainage. When used as a skincoat beneath structural laminates, it significantly improves surface quality and long-term durability, making it ideal for marine, tooling, and swimming pool applications.

Applications

Crystic® VE679 PA (Thix HV) is recommended for:

  • Marine skincoats
Hulls, decks, and marine mouldings requiring enhanced surface finish

  • Tooling applications
Cosmetic surface layers beneath structural laminates

  • Swimming pools & wet-area structures
Where blister resistance and surface quality are critical

  • Hand lay-up & spray lamination processes

  • Cosmetic laminate layers
Used prior to structural vinyl ester or polyester backing laminates

Resin Properties (Uncured)

  • Appearance: Red / Brown

  • Viscosity (Thixotropic):

    • ~2.5 dPa·s (ICI Cone & Plate @ 25°C)

    • ~2550 mPa·s (Brookfield Spindle 3, 5 rpm @ 25°C)

    • ~800 mPa·s (Brookfield Spindle 3, 50 rpm @ 25°C)

  • Gel Time @ 25°C:

    • ~25 minutes with 2.0% Butanox® M50

  • Storage Stability: Up to 6 months at ≤20°C

Mechanical & Thermal Properties (Cured)

(Post cure applied)
  • Barcol Hardness: ~35

  • Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT): ~94°C

  • Tensile Strength: ~52 MPa

  • Tensile Modulus: ~3.0 GPa

  • Elongation at Break: ~2.1%

Processing & Handling

Crystic® VE679 PA (Thix HV) is pre-accelerated and designed for cold curing. It requires only the addition of a medium-reactivity MEKP catalyst, such as Butanox® M50, at 1.2–2.0%.

Important: Catalyst and accelerator must never be mixed directly together.

Post curing is recommended to achieve optimum chemical, water, and heat resistance before placing parts into service.

Packaging & Availability
  • 20 kg pail
  • 200 kg metallic drums

  • Bulk supply available on request
