Duratec® Tan Base Primer – 707-051

High-Build Fairing & Shaping Primer for Composite Plugs, Patterns & Models

Duratec® Tan Base Primer 707-051 is a low-porosity, high-build polyester primer formulated for fast fairing, shaping and surface preparation of composite plugs, patterns, models, and a broad range of substrates. Engineered for versatility and ease of use, this primer can be sprayed, brushed or rolled, allowing fabricators to quickly establish accurate surface profiles with minimal effort.

With rapid air-cure capability, excellent workability, and the ability to shape easily with a knife, file or sandpaper, Duratec Base Primer provides a stable, dimensionally consistent surface ready for secondary primers, topcoats or tooling coatings. Its high heat distortion temperature (200°F / 93°C) reduces the risk of post-cure distortion, exothermic print-through or surface movement, making it ideal for demanding plug and pattern construction across marine, automotive, industrial, leisure, and architectural applications.

Key Features

Rapid High-Build Application

Builds 1–3 mm (40–120 mils) wet-on-wet with minimal sag, enabling fast establishment of surface contour and fairing profiles.

Can be sprayed, brushed or rolled—ideal for workshops without spray facilities or where small areas require hand application.

Shapes cleanly using a knife, file, rasp or sandpaper, accelerating fairing and modelling tasks.

Air cures to an easily sandable surface, reducing turnaround time and improving production efficiency.

Provides an excellent base for surfacing primers and topcoats, reducing the risk of porosity or pinholes.

93°C (200°F) HDT helps prevent print-through, distortion or movement during post-cure or elevated-temperature processes.

Performs exceptionally on composites, MDF, GRP, wood, foam, plaster and clay.

Why Choose Duratec® Primers?

Exceptional Surface Quality

Formulated to eliminate pinholes, porosity and print-through, Duratec primers build rapidly to deliver a fair, high-density surface ready for sanding and finishing.

High-solids, easy-to-sand formulations reduce labour time while delivering consistent results—ideal for commercial production environments.

Originally developed for high-performance marine applications, Duratec primers now support a wide range of industries requiring accuracy, stability, and long-term durability.

Suitable for polyester, vinyl ester, epoxy laminates, FRP moulds, plug construction, composite tooling, and repair substrates.
