Duratec® White Surface Primer – 714-002

High-Build Polyester Primer for Plug & Pattern Surfacing

Duratec® White Surface Primer 714-002 is a high-build polyester primer formulated to produce an ultra-smooth, durable surfacing layer for plugs, patterns, composite parts and mould preparation. Engineered for fast application and easy sanding, this primer delivers excellent filling properties, rapid film build, and reliable adhesion across composite substrates.

Designed for professional composite fabricators, Duratec White Surface Primer provides a stable, low-shrink surface that eliminates porosity, minimises print-through, and prepares parts for high-gloss topcoats or polishing. Its fast gel time, consistent sprayability and superior workability make it ideal for achieving production-grade finishes with reduced labour time.

Product Properties
  • Gel Time: 10–15 minutes (at 2% MEKP, ambient ≥ 64°F / 18°C)
  • Mix Ratio: 2% MEKP by weight (approx. 20 cc per quart)
  • Application Thickness: Minimum 10 mil total build (4–5 mils per pass, crosshatch technique)
  • Sanding Time: After full cure; typically 2–4 hours depending on temperature
  • Polishing / Topcoat Window: Minimum 8 hours after start of sanding
  • Colour Options: White

Key Features

Exceptional Surface Quality

Rapid film build allows users to achieve a smooth, defect-free surface with fewer passes.

Sands cleanly with minimal clogging, enabling fast progression to fine grits and final polishing.

Effectively fills surface profile, pinholes and minor imperfections to achieve a uniform finish.

Maintains surface accuracy during cure and post-cure, ideal for plug and mould construction.

Can be sprayed with HVLP or gelcoat systems and used both in-mould or on finished substrates.

Bonds reliably to composite tooling, patterns, FRP laminates and matched Duratec surfacing products.

Why Choose Duratec® Primers?

Exceptional Surface Quality

Formulated to eliminate pinholes, porosity and print-through, Duratec primers build rapidly to deliver a fair, high-density surface ready for sanding and finishing.

High-solids, easy-to-sand formulations reduce labour time while delivering consistent results—ideal for commercial production environments.

Originally developed for high-performance marine applications, Duratec primers now support a wide range of industries requiring accuracy, stability, and long-term durability.

Suitable for polyester, vinyl ester, epoxy laminates, FRP moulds, plug construction, composite tooling, and repair substrates.

Applications

  • Plug and pattern surfacing

  • Composite mould preparation

  • Surface filling and profile correction

  • Fairing of tooling, FRP components and composite assemblies

  • High-gloss topcoat preparation for marine, industrial and automotive parts
