Coating Quantity

Work out how much WEST SYSTEM epoxy a job needs before you open a pack: allow 8.2 m² per kilogram of mixed epoxy for a sealer coat, and 3.7 kg per square metre for a 3.2 mm flow coat.

The quantity table below pairs each 105 Epoxy Resin® pack size with its matching hardener, gives the mixed volume and mass, and states the area that mix will cover as a saturation coat on a porous surface and as buildup coats on a non-porous one. ATL Composites manufactures and distributes WEST SYSTEM in Australia, so the pack sizes quoted here are the ones you will be buying.

  • 8.2 m²/kgSealer coat coverage, mixed epoxy (40 ft²/lb)
  • 3.7 kg/m²Flow coat over a sealed surface (0.75 lb/ft²)
  • 3.2 mmTypical flow coat thickness (1/8 in)

Key points

  • Sealer coat: allow 8.2 m² per kilogram of mixed epoxy (40 ft² per pound).
  • Flow coat: a 3.2 mm (1/8 in) flow coat over a sealed surface takes about 3.7 kg per square metre (0.75 lb per ft²).
  • Porous surfaces drink more. The same mix covers a smaller area as a saturation coat on timber or core than it does as a buildup coat on a non-porous surface.
  • Clear finishes: use 207 Special Clear Hardener® with 105 Resin.
  • Large batches cure faster. A big mixed mass has a short pot life and can exotherm — use a slower hardener and decant into a wide container.

Clear finishes and mixing by volume

Method notes

Best clear finish

For the best clear finish applications, use 207 Special Clear Hardener® with 105 Epoxy Resin®.

If the Mini Pumps pump too slowly

If Mini Pumps pump too slowly for the quantity you are mixing, you can mix the epoxy by volume instead. Refer to the hardener label for the correct volume mix ratio.

When working with a large quantity of mixed epoxy, keep the shorter pot life and the risk of exotherm in mind. Use a slower hardener, preferably 207 Special Clear Hardener.

Questions we get asked about coating quantity

4 questions

How much epoxy do I need per square metre?

For a sealer coat, allow 8.2 m² of coverage per kilogram of mixed epoxy. For a flow coat about 3.2 mm (1/8 in) thick over a sealed surface, allow 3.7 kg of mixed epoxy per square metre.

Which hardener should I use for a clear coating?

207 Special Clear Hardener® with 105 Epoxy Resin®.

Can I mix WEST SYSTEM epoxy by volume instead of using pumps?

Yes. Refer to the hardener label for the correct volume mix ratio. With large mixed quantities remember that pot life shortens and a contained mass can exotherm, so choose a slower hardener — preferably 207 Special Clear Hardener — and decant into a container with more surface area.
